Finally!
I go my hands on a real working build of longhorn (milestone). First I downloaded microsoft Windows Codename: Longhorn Professional, tried to install it, but it was corrupted, then I downloaded Longhorn 4039 - but it did not work either. After few tries I got Longhorn pro to work. I got the 3718 M3 Build (lab06_N.021119-1730). This was one of the first longhorn concepts right after the release of Microsoft Windows XP. It has a very simmilar interface to XP, only with slight changes. First things that I noticed was new bootscreen, logon etc, and The Windows Sidebar - total copy of
Desktop Sidebar created much earlyer. Even the control was very familiar, only slight effects added. Sidebar is not a standalone program in 3718 - it is explorer.exe, a system integrated sidebar. Then I noticed the plex style - elegant and nice, simmilar to luna it shows blue gradients all over the system, including context menus. The explorer window looks a bit like classic XP one but with some features added: Left filter pane - a quite useless pane which takes up 1/4 of the window. Shows search, filter by alphabet etc. Then there is a enormus shellstyle thing. So called Explorer preview. Even worse then filter pane - it takes up almost whole window and is quite useless. But like the sidebar It is resiable, so you can resize or even hide it for better browsing. Anyway, this build does not have more - it is same XP with features added. No effects, no more features etc. But still this build is very usefull to me, History of further longhorn builds and Vista RCs almost start with this Build of longhorn. And it is also a good audition for graphics things, Maybe I'll be releasing a Longhorn bootscreen, Logon, and most famous plex visual style.
And if you want to test longhorn - I do not recommend this build if you are expecting much new features like dwm and effects. if I get Build 4039 working I'll post another small review.
