This one that I sent in and worked on first. I'm not quite sure about the font sizes, since this is a A5 oriented size. Not sure what to do with the footer either, it looks worse without the gradient, and any other accent color makes it out of place. You should have seen the non-desaturated one Thanks for the tips btw, are you in editorial and print?
My father ran a publishing business for a while and I used to help him design pharmaceutical ads and such. Plus, I've lately been spending a lot of time studying websites, typefaces and print so the cynical eye for layouts has only recently developed. I'm not a professional but definitely working toward it. The best teachers are successful examples - copy covers of The Economist, WSJ, TIME magazines for starters and that should tell you a lot about good editorial design. Plus, you're a very accomplished interface designer and artist so use your strengths and aesthetic eye to guide you - the underlying elements are the same. (Thanks, for the watch btw! It truly is an honor. )
